The Philippines was chosen by Oikocredit International as a pilot area for institutionalizing Disaster Risk Reduction & Management (DRRM) among partners. Oikocredit started this global initiative early this year in the light of typhoon Haiyan and other disasters that devastated different countries in recent years.

Oikocredit has supported affected partners through its disaster solidarity fund since disasters have become common in recent years.  A long-lasting approach is being developed to minimize loss of lives and property by helping partners develop their DRRM strategies and business continuity plans.   It is in Oikocredit’s interest to support its partners’ strategy for improving disaster resilience and reducing its risks.

The pilot project will test a capacity building intervention in the form of a DRRM training with partners.  The design will be tested, refined and rolled out in the Philippines and other regions where Oikocredit operates.

The project will build on the premise of the DRRM definition used by the UN agencies: It is the conceptual framework of elements considered with the possibilities to minimize vulnerabilities and disaster risks throughout a society, to avoid (prevention) or to limit (mitigation and preparedness) the adverse impacts of hazards, within the broad context of sustainable development.

The project aims to increase partner awareness on DRRM; equip them with practical tools, such as hazard vulnerability assessments, hazard mapping, crafting contingency plan and business continuity planning; and formulate DRRM strategies that are appropriate for their own context and environment.

For this endeavour, Oikocredit-Philippines partnered with the Corporate Network for Disaster Response.

The results from the partners’ planning will be examined to help Oikocredit sharpen its policy on disasters and improve support to affected partners.

The training-‘writeshop’ was held from 29 September to 3 October, with  11 partners participating. The partners were mentored in drafting their own DRRM strategies.
